4 Great Things To Do Before Summer Ends

By Julia Dunn on August 19, 2016

Is it really August already? Many college students are going back to school this month, but others may be starting up again mid to late-September.

Whether you’ve got a week left or a month left, there’s probably something you’ve been meaning to do this summer that you just haven’t gotten around to doing.

Here are a few ideas of things to do before summer ends (some are purely for fun, and others may make your school year a lot easier!)

Visit that friend you said you’d hang out with back in June.

Time slips away from us. If you’ve worked a full-time job this summer or split your time between a part-time job and some summer courses at your university, it’s no surprise that you may not have had too much time to spare.

If your summer session classes are ending or your workplace will let you take off a day or two, contact that person you’ve been trying to see for months and plan a fun-filled day to catch up. If you neglect making these plans, the school year will start again before you know it and you may have to wait even longer to spend time with friends.

Find out what textbooks you’ll need for next term and scout out the cheapest price.

We all know that textbooks are starting to cost more than a very used car. It’s atrocious, isn’t it? Wouldn’t you rather spend that money on better items (from coffee to plane tickets for spontaneous visits home)?

Many universities have a textbook lookup system well before the term begins where students can search for classes they’re about to take and find out what books the professor has assigned. If not, you may be able to email your professors directly towards the end of summer and find out what they’re requiring you to purchase one way or another.

Once you know the names of your books, post on Facebook to see if you know anyone with those books who will let you borrow their copies, or scroll through a Textbook Exchange group online to see if someone wants to sell you their books at a cheaper price than the bookstore is selling them for.

Alternatively, students with a university email address get six free months of Amazon Prime, which is another place to look for textbooks at reduced prices. If you care enough about saving money and you’ve got some time on your hands before the term begins, make a goal to find all of your textbooks for as close to zero dollars as you can! It’s fun and frugal!

Go on a fun date with your partner.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy nice weather with the person you love, try out that new cafe downtown with the world-class croissants, or curl up watching Food Network Star together in bed after a day of frolicking near the wharf.

Go out to brunch, track down a few rare Pokémon, or go on an evening stroll if it’s warm enough outside. If the two of you don’t have a super demanding job, internship or summer class, summer is a wonderful time to get closer and have a lot of fun in these low-key months!

If you’re not in a relationship, take this time before school commences to take yourself on a date! Go out to a movie, get the new hairstyle you’ve been seeing all over the internet, or buy a whole chocolate cake and keep it to just yourself. There’s no reason you shouldn’t treat yourself in some way and get some relaxation time in before the chaos of college starts up again!

Get organized for the school year.

Did you have a problem last year with remembering where you put your notebooks after coming home from class? What about that pile of laundry that took over your room because you didn’t have a big enough clothes hamper? Getting organized and solving problems before they happen is a perfect way to get yourself in check for the school year.

Make sure you have enough storage boxes, enough desk space to work on your flashcards, and a system in place to make sure no important documents get lost. Think about whatever slowed down your productivity last academic year and take steps now to fix it before summer ends.

Try out some new recipes.

While you’ve still got some relatively free time, you may find it fun to spend these next few weeks trying out the new recipes you’ve bookmarked on your laptop. Trying out recipes (that are hopefully low-stress and comprised of simple ingredients) may introduce you to new dishes and snacks you can make during the school year and take with you for lunch.

Getting excited about new foods will increase your energy and make meal preparation easier during the term since you’ll have plenty of options from which to choose.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
